Welcome to our information page for Family Promise, an outreach ministry to provide shelter for homeless families so that they can stay together during a time of difficulty. Here you can learn about upcoming hosting events, training opportunities, volunteer opportunities, and supplies that we might need for the program. I enjoy sharing this ministry with all of you who generously volunteer your time, talent and treasure to make this program a success. May God bless you always. Thanks for visiting.
A special Thank You! to Stewart’s Shops, who have given a $500 grant to our Family Promise program from their Holiday Match grant program. When you can, please patronize your local Stewart’s shops in appreciation for their support. The ice cream is always good!

About Family Promise in Our Cluster
- What is Family Promise?
Family Promise is a national program providing shelter for homeless families using an interfaith network (group of local churches). At least 13 organizations partner to provide shelter. Each host organization provides shelter, dinner and breakfast for up to 15 people from Sunday afternoon until Sunday morning the following week. After that week, the families move to another mosque, synagogue or church for the next week. Each organization will typically host families four times in a year. (Read more…)
THANK YOU to everyone who is helping during April Host Week!
- Thank you for understanding the following guidelines regarding gifts for the families.
Please do not ask guests questions about their situation or any personal information.
If a guest initiates the sharing of personal information with you, it must be kept confidential.
Avoid being alone with a guest at the Host Site, including children. A parent should be present with their own child(ren)
Please do not give money or gifts directly to a guest or their children.
Please ask one of the site coordinators if you would like to donate directly to help a guest and he/she will discuss it with the Director.
Please allow/encourage guests to clean dishes and participate in housekeeping duties at the Host Site.
All adult volunteers for Family Promise must have a valid Virtus Certificate (Safe Environment Training) and receive training for Family Promise. Anyone who can provide a Virtus Certificate for training received in the last fifteen years does no need to take the Virtus training again. Virtus certification requires a background check. There are Virtus training sessions held in the diocese on a regular basis. You can find the schedule for training sessions at the Diocese of Albany Website. From the drop down list select “Albany, NY (Diocese)”.
Volunteers must also have a current background check with the diocese. Please contact Deacon Tim for details.
For any additional information about the program in our cluster or to sign up as a volunteer, please contact Deacon Tim Kosto at the church of St. Mary (DeaconTim@stmaryny.org or 518-449-2232 x20).
